Robot Pool Cleaner Troubleshooting Guide
Quick Fix Checklist
Before each use: Check filter basket is empty and clean.
Weekly: Inspect tracks/wheels for wear and debris. Clean impeller.
Monthly: Deep-clean filter cartridges, check all brushes for damage.
Common issue: If cleaner won't climb walls, check water level (must cover cleaner fully when on wall).
Robot pool cleaners encounter issues due to mechanical wear, water chemistry problems, or operational mistakes. This guide covers all common problems for corded, cordless, suction-side, and pressure-side pool cleaners.
1. Won't Climb Walls or Falls Off Walls
Problem: Cleaner stays on pool floor or climbs partway up wall then falls back down.
Causes and Fixes:
Insufficient Water Level
Cause: Water level too low. Cleaner needs at least 6 inches of water above it when on the wall to maintain suction.
Fix: Fill pool to proper level (usually middle of skimmer opening). Check for leaks if water level drops quickly.
Dirty or Clogged Filter
Cause: Full filter reduces suction power. Cleaner cannot generate enough force to climb walls.
Fix:
- Remove filter basket or cartridge from cleaner
- Rinse thoroughly with a garden hose
- For cartridge filters: soak in filter cleaning solution (1 part muriatic acid to 20 parts water) for 30 minutes, then rinse
- Replace filter if torn, stretched, or over 2 years old
Worn Tracks or Wheels
Cause: Tracks/wheels have lost tread or are damaged. Cannot grip pool surface.
Fix:
- Inspect all tracks or wheels for smooth, worn surfaces
- Check for cracks, tears, or missing tread blocks
- Replace tracks/wheels as pairs (not individually) to maintain balance
- Dolphin replacement tracks: every 1-2 years. Polaris wheels: every 2-3 years.
Algae or Slippery Pool Walls
Cause: Algae growth or calcium buildup on pool walls creates slippery surface.
Fix:
- Brush pool walls manually to remove algae
- Shock pool with chlorine and run pump for 24 hours
- For calcium deposits: use muriatic acid treatment (consult pool professional)
- Wait 24-48 hours after chemical treatment before running robot cleaner
Float Adjustment (Corded Models)
Cause: Cable float is positioned incorrectly, creating drag or unbalanced weight.
Fix:
- Position cable float 12-18 inches from cleaner body
- Ensure float can move freely along cable
- For deeper pools (>6 feet), position float closer to cleaner (10-12 inches)
2. Suction Loss / No Suction
Problem: Cleaner moves but doesn't pick up debris. Debris left behind on pool floor.
Causes and Fixes:
Clogged Impeller
Cause: Leaves, hair, or debris stuck in impeller chamber blocking water flow.
Fix:
- Disconnect cleaner from power (corded) or remove from pool (cordless)
- Locate impeller access door (usually on bottom or side of unit)
- Remove screws or twist-lock cover to access impeller
- Remove debris wrapped around impeller blades
- Spin impeller by hand - should rotate freely with no resistance
- Reassemble and test
Filter Full or Improperly Seated
Fix:
- Empty filter basket/cartridge
- Check filter seals and gaskets for proper seating
- Ensure filter cover clicks or locks securely
- Check for cracks in filter housing that allow water bypass
Worn or Damaged Diaphragm (Suction-Side Cleaners)
Cause: Rubber diaphragm inside suction cleaner is torn or hardened.
Fix:
- Disassemble cleaner according to manual
- Locate diaphragm (rubber disc that flexes to create suction)
- Check for tears, cracks, or hardening
- Replace diaphragm (available from manufacturer or pool supply stores)
- Lubricate new diaphragm with silicone lubricant before installing
3. Cable Tangling (Corded Models)
Problem: Power cable wraps around itself, creating knots or preventing cleaner from reaching all areas.
Causes and Fixes:
Cable Memory (Coiled from Storage)
Fix:
- Remove cable from cleaner completely
- Lay cable flat in sun for 2-3 hours to relax coils
- Alternatively, stretch cable manually: secure one end and walk backward while holding tension
- Before storage: always lay cable flat or hang in large coil (not tight loops)
Swivel Not Working
Cause: Cable swivel (where cable connects to cleaner) is stuck or broken.
Fix:
- Locate swivel connection at cleaner end of cable
- Test swivel by rotating cable - should spin 360 degrees freely
- If stuck: clean with mild soap and water, lubricate with silicone spray
- If broken: replace swivel (universal swivels available for most brands)
Cable Too Long for Pool
Cause: Excess cable creates tangles as cleaner moves.
Fix:
- Measure pool length: need cable length of pool length + 3 feet
- Secure excess cable on pool deck with cable weight or strap
- Do not coil excess cable in pool - lay it straight along edge
4. Not Moving / Stuck in One Spot
Problem: Cleaner powers on but doesn't move, or moves in tiny circles.
Causes and Fixes:
Debris Blocking Tracks/Wheels
Fix:
- Remove cleaner from pool and inspect all tracks/wheels
- Remove leaves, sticks, or string wrapped around axles
- Rotate each wheel by hand to ensure free movement
- Check for pebbles or small objects lodged in track grooves
Motor or Gearbox Failure
Cause: Internal motor or gearbox is damaged.
Diagnosis:
- Listen for motor sound when cleaner is powered on
- If no sound: motor failure (professional repair needed)
- If motor runs but wheels don't turn: gearbox failure (professional repair needed)
Stuck in Main Drain or Deep End
Cause: Main drain or deep end suction overpowers cleaner's movement.
Fix:
- Reduce main drain suction by opening other pool return lines
- For suction-side cleaners: adjust flow valve on dedicated cleaner line
- Manually place cleaner in shallow end to start cleaning cycle
5. Debris Detection Failures (Smart Cleaners)
Problem: AI-powered cleaner (Beatbot, Aiper Scuba) doesn't prioritize dirty areas or leaves clean areas dirty.
Causes and Fixes:
Camera or Sensors Dirty
Fix:
- Remove cleaner from pool after use
- Wipe all camera lenses and ultrasonic sensors with clean, soft cloth
- Do not use abrasive materials or harsh chemicals
- Rinse with fresh water after each use (especially in salt water pools)
Water Clarity Issues
Cause: Cloudy or murky water prevents cameras from detecting debris.
Fix:
- Test and balance pool chemistry (pH 7.2-7.6, chlorine 1-3 ppm)
- Run pool pump and filter for 24 hours to clear water
- Use pool clarifier if water is slightly cloudy
- For very dirty pools: manually clean first, then use robot for maintenance
Firmware Needs Update
Fix:
- Check manufacturer app for firmware updates
- Connect cleaner to WiFi or Bluetooth (per manufacturer instructions)
- Download and install updates when cleaner is charged and out of water
6. Short Battery Life (Cordless Models)
Problem: Cordless cleaner runs for less than advertised time or stops mid-cycle.
Causes and Fixes:
Battery Age and Degradation
Cause: Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity over time (typically 2-3 years).
Fix:
- Check battery health in manufacturer app (if available)
- If capacity is below 70% of original: replace battery
- Order replacement battery from manufacturer
- Professional replacement recommended (waterproof seals must be maintained)
Filter Overworked Battery
Cause: Clogged filter forces motor to work harder, draining battery faster.
Fix: Clean filter before every use (see Section 1).
Charging Dock Issues
Cause: Cleaner not charging fully due to dirty contacts or faulty dock.
Fix:
- Clean charging contacts on both cleaner and dock with cotton swab and rubbing alcohol
- Ensure cleaner is properly seated on dock (indicator light should show charging)
- Test dock with multimeter: should output correct voltage (check manual for specs)
- If dock is faulty: contact manufacturer for replacement
7. Cleaning Cycle Won't Complete
Problem: Cleaner stops before completing programmed cycle time.
Causes and Fixes:
Thermal Overload Protection
Cause: Motor overheats due to clogged filter or blocked impeller. Safety shutoff activates.
Fix:
- Clean filter and impeller (see Sections 1 and 2)
- Let cleaner cool for 1 hour before restarting
- Check water temperature: very hot water (>85°F / 29°C) can cause overheating. Run cleaner in morning/evening when cooler.
Power Supply Issues (Corded Models)
Fix:
- Check GFCI outlet hasn't tripped
- Test outlet with another device to verify power
- Inspect power supply transformer for damage
- Check cable for cuts or fraying (especially near connections)
